How to brief a video production company

Camera operator on set with a cinema camera

The best videos we have made started with a clear brief. It does not need to be long or formal. It needs to answer five questions.

1. What should the viewer do next?

Watch, share, book, buy, donate. Pick one. A video that asks for everything usually gets nothing, and the answer decides how we cut it and where it ends.

2. Who is watching, and where?

A vertical clip for a feed and a two minute film for a gala screening are different jobs. Tell us the audience and the platform, and we will shape the length, pacing and framing to fit.

3. What does it have to feel like?

Send us two or three videos you like, from any industry, and tell us what you like about them. References do more than adjectives ever will.

4. What are the fixed points?

Dates, locations, people who must appear, logos, legal lines, music you already own. Telling us the limits early is how we protect the budget.

5. Who signs off?

Name the people who approve the work, and the date you need it. One round of consolidated feedback beats five rounds of separate notes.

Not sure about any of these? Bring what you have. Working out the answers together is part of what we do.
